As additional points of comparison: The Big Dig, arguably one of the biggest public-works boondoggles ever cost ~$14.6bn as of 2006, and that was over a 24 year period (in 2006 dollars, starting in 1982). The cost of a manned mission to Mars is in the $150-400bn range. Keep in mind that 40 years ago we got a dozen men onto the Moon for "only" $135bn.
