I have spent several hours in the past coupla days helping SAE strip down/take apart their old car, #68. To partake in this activity I wore gloves to protect my hands from being cut etc as well as from getting too much grease/brake fluid/whatever on my hands. I take my gloves off yesterday evening, and they're stained black (well, not my entire hands, just really my index fingers). At first I thought it was some fluid that leaked through my gloves; nope, it's dye from the gloves. The palms are some blend of Nylon and Polyurethane configured into some structure resembling suede or leather or something. Anyway, it's dyed black and for whatever reason, it felt like bleeding onto my hands. Now it looks like I'm just dirty and don't like washing my hands (generally untrue). I'm tempted to wash them and see if that fixes it, but I'd want to wash them by themselves so as not to get black dye all over anything else. I'm also slightly concerned about melting/damaging them...there's lotsa polymers involved in their construction. Perhaps I'll do that tomorrow while working on HW, wash them by themselves on a gentle setting. Any suggestions would be welcome. They're from a company with a very generic name ("Firm Grip") and I've been unable to locate the gloves on any website except for one listing imports from Pakistan (where they were made). I was hoping the manufacturer had care instructions on their website or something. I bought them at Home Depot, I figured they wouldnt be that obscure. Nice gloves otherwise, though.
Now for the real irony of the week:
I don't know if any of you remember the post I made that contained this section:
"The first group was from Sigma Tau Gamma. I immediately didn't like them. The two of them came in, thinking they were all cool. One of 'em was wearing a big fur coat. Fur-coat guy asked what I was playing, WoW, of course, and then proceeded to assure me that SigTau has the most World of Warcraft players of any of the frats, "and I don't mean that in a good way" ::metaphoric wink:: Now, I could have said any game, and he prolly would have said the same thing, he had that overly pushy door-to-door/used car salesmen aura to him."
Oddly enough, I was this ::holds fingers less than an inch apart:: close to pledging at that very frat this past week. No joke. I knew several of the brothers last year through classes and Dungeons and Dragons (at the time of the last post I hadn't realized that Tommy and PIF were SigTau brothers) and then a mutual friend got me going to SigTau stuff even before the year started and it sorta became a natural thing for me to hang out over there. they're all huge gamerish geeks. It's really great. So over a coupla weeks I go and eat ice cream and play in a Halo 2 tourney (Team Defect (Ed and myself) lost pretty horribly, unfortunately) and watched movies and whatnot. Then they offered me a bid and, while I wasn't that surprised, it meant I actually had a deadline to make this decision. Last year I had no intention to join a frat. I only went to 2 rush events, both at AEPi (the first because a girl said she was going and I should go too) and the other because I like laser tag. Come to think of it, it was as girl that got me going to SigTau events too...hmm) and I only really considered joining for about an hour. But this year, as I spent more and more time at the house, I found myself thinking "maybe I do belong here..." In the end it was a very hard decision, I spent a good 2 days thinking mostly about it. In the end, I decided against it. I already have too much on my plate this year/semester what with SnS, SAE and classes. I felt that if it was this hard to decide then I shouldn't add something else in to that. I also went out for dinner with some of my friends (the heros) that week and had a blast, as usual. That reminded me that of the fact that I already have really close friends that I can hang out with whenever; I don't need to join for that.
The final 'sign' for me was that SAE had our first real meeting of the year scheduled for 5:00 friday afternoon, same time as Pledge night started, sorta sealing the deal for me.
In other news I spent several hours with the Matts (between about 9:30ish PM and 2:30ish AM) helping them rearrange their room. My work was centered around helping #2 get his bed lofted over a platform desk (essentially a bed with a desk in place of the inter-headboard/foorboard framing). He traded his old desk to a guy down the hall with aforementioned platform desk. We fight the new desk into the room (after moving most of the Matts' worldly possessions onto the floor/hall) and realize that Matt's bedfram is about 4" too narrow to fit atop the pins on the desk frame. Note: Before we carried the frame out of the other guy's room and down the hall I suggested measuring the frame. Upon realizing this, Matt asked what possible reason there would be to suspect that they werent the same size, my reply "They aren't the same color!" Anyway, long times pass as we devise various mechanisms of dubious stability to "adapt" the bedframes as to provide #2 with a bed as well as a desk, neither of which would collapse and destroy him or his computer. Eventually, we were about to head out to the dungeon to construct one (note: it's about 2am), when we realize that the fact that Matt's bedframe has less than 18" of floor clearance also means that when you put it on top of the desk you have about 18" of clearance. Finally we managed to talk the guy down the hall out of his current bedframe (it matched up with the desk) in exchange for us doing all the swapping of bedframes and whatnot. End of the story, Matt now has a functioning bed/desk lofted unit. I'll link to pics when www.hamerschlagheros.com is updated with them.
Today I woke up, briefly thought it was sunday (meaning I had a 12:30 SnS Board meeting) and then went over to the SAE garage and worked till about 1:30 when I headed over to the Kiltie Game (Football game) and stayed till about the 4th quarter when I was called by aforementioned #2 and went along to Eat'n'Park. I ended up back at my room and haven't managed to do anything useful yet. Drew just got back with pictures so I can make an illustrated instruction set of how to reach the Dungeon.
I guess I'll do that now...
[Edit(12:40am)] The directions are done! I'm hosting them on my webspace prior to them going up on the SnS website.
[Edit(2:30am)] The renovation pictures are up!
